Everyone must be familiar with this dish which can be found in many Singapore restaurants too. Tom Yum is a type of hot and sour Thai soup, usually cooked with shrimps. This name is derived from two Thai words with “Tom” refers to the boiling process, while “yam” refers to a Thai spicy and sour salad.

Tom Yum is characterized by the seasonings used to give a lemony essence and floral flavor. The broth is made using a combination of different ingredients like kaffir lime leaves, lime juice, fish sauce, galangal, crushed peppers, and lemongrass. These ingredients are crushed together and stir-fried in oil to create the Tom Yum paste.

Now if you are wondering why the taste of your bowl of Tom Yum soup is always so thick and fragrant is because a lot of different spices are mixed together to create this delicious dish.

Thai Curries

There are four different curries with different colored-paste: green, red and yellow. They all have distinct tastes and are made with different ingredients.

Green Curry is the most famous version of Thai curry which contains ingredients such as cilantro, kaffir, lime leaf, lemongrass, fish sauce, garlic, ginger, and basil. It is considered to be the spiciest curry in Thailand but it is also sweet because of the large amount of coconut milk added in.

Red Curry also contains coconut milk in addition to other ingredients like garlic, spices, galangal, and shrimp paste along with the red chilies.

Lastly, yellow curry which is also known as the Thai version of Indian curry is made up of turmeric, curry powder that is pounded combined with coriander seeds, cumin, lemongrass, galangal or ginger, garlic, and yellow or red chili.
